There's a Batman story titled The Long Halloween. Published over 13 issues in and , it takes place early in Bruce Wayne's career as a costumed crimefighter.
It's two stories in one: Batman, Gordon and, at first, Dent are dealing with a gang war between Gotham's top two crime families; and there is a serial killer known as Holiday, who not only kills on holidays, starting with Halloween, but leaves items related to the various holidays at the crime scenes.
It shows how Gotham's underworld goes from being controlled by old-style crime bosses to being controlled by supervillains with costumes and plans based around themes, as a counterpoint to Batman himself. I have said before that Halloween is the demarcation line: The end of October, the last month of the baseball season.
Or, since , it is sometimes, instead, the last full month. It can get cold by October 31, and even sooner. It can even snow: We had snow in Central Jersey on October 29, And, of course, Hurricane Sandy clobbered us on October 29, And with the falling leaves being very slick and raising the potential for accidents pedestrian and vehicular , no bad-weather day in October feels as bad as a bad-weather day in November, which starts tomorrow.

DC Comics writer Dennis O'Neil, who died earlier this year after a great career writing for both Superman and Batman although he had nothing to do with The Long Halloween , came up with a great way of comparing their hometowns: "Metropolis is Manhattan between 14th and th Streets on the brightest, sunniest day of the year. Gotham City is Manhattan below 14th Street at 11 minutes past midnight on the coldest night in November. So now, the weather is colder, which intensifies any rain that may come.
