For the past 2 years , we have always stayed in casa particulares , with no problems. Cubans are allowed in all resorts and hotels. It's almost hard to believe now that not too long ago, Cubans in general were not allowed to stay in the hotels frequented by tourists.
They are now but along the way certain hotels adopted their own rules too. For instance, if there is a large age difference between the couple, some hotels will not allow the Cuban to stay with the non-Cuban. This is more common in the higher-end hotels as opposed to the 2 star joints like Islazul.
It is safer to stay in a casa particular and a lot cheaper, plus no hassles from the communist morals squads. Your girlfriend could be arrested as a hooker. The locals should know the situation. Do you research first. Many hotels will turn away a Cuban visitor based on age difference or a host of reasons. You will want to make sure everything is in place in advance. I constantly see old grandads in their 80s and up with " girlfriends " who look about 14 years old in hotels everywhere, so I doubt its a problem.
There must be some I know, albeit a very very small percentage! It is the economics of the socialist culture. Of course, there is Venezuela, which is another basket case socialist economic disaster. Unfortunately, there are no tourists in Venezuela now, it is too dangerous. People are stupid, they think their government can give them everything then end up, like Cuba and Venezuela, with nothing. I totally agree with everything you are saying and believe me know smilecu only too well!! I found it all quite disturbing but what I found most uncomfortable was the age gap and I'm not easily shocked or bothered about anything.
