Hello, i tourist might want to spend 1 or 2 nights in either Buriram, Sisaket or Surin town and wanted to ask if you have an explainable preference for one of these towns. I have a rental car and mostly stay in south Isaan small towns which including the countryside i generally like more than the bigger towns.
If you say, "visit Khmer ruins or Khao Phra Wihan", i can do that from a village base. Also i don't need museums, holiday parks, generic aircon coffee shops or expat bars with or without live rock band. The guided village tours out of Sisaket might be nice.
Korat, Ubon Ratchathani and others are not considered. The quality and ambience of the live music not the volume or the madness-level would be one factor. A hotel below Baht with safe parking and walking distance to the music hall would be nice anyway i wouldn't use my car for any in-town-commuting day or night, i'd take a tuktuk or motorcycle taxi. I haven't been up that way in years maybe 10 years even.. Have been to both Surin and Buriram and preferred the latter.
Hotel options was probably part of the reason as the ones in Surin were mainly brothels. This was years ago though so hopefully someone has some more recent info. My favourite part of this trip was getting the daytime express train back to BK. It was promoted as a VIP option with food and comfy seats they fed you a really good meal with drinks and snacks in between. The best bit though was the head conductor walking carriage to carriage with his entire staff entourage, all of them in immaculate uniforms, and spending 20 mins introducing everyone of them, in intimate detail, before breaking into a semi eulogy about how proud they were to be working for SRT, serving the people, serving the country, serving the King.
I like the night market in Sisaket best. As town Surin is my favorite. Buriram is ok but somehow does not cut it for me.
