History behind the design

When introduced, the Subaru XT was called "the ultimate in jazzy design", in contrast to Subaru's older "cheap and ugly" offerings. The extreme wedge body shape was possible due to the engine's flat horizontally opposed cylinder layout shared by all Subarus. The XT is an icon in its own right with almost every aspect of its existence stretching too far into the future to really be appreciated by 1980s folk from ride height adjustment to a jet-like digital cluster.
