A New Jersey man has been convicted of enticing women to travel from other states for prostitution, refusing to pay them and sexually assaulting them, U. Attorney Philip R. Sellinger said. Jose Torres, 45, was charged with four counts of persuading, inducing and enticing women to travel in interstate commerce to engage in prostitution in an indictment filed in the U.
District Court of New Jersey. Torres used classified and prostitution websites to convince sex workers to travel from out-of-state locations — including New York and Canada — to engage in prostitution with him, authorities said.
He promised the victims large sums of money, but when they eventually asked for a payment, he became aggressive, often assaulting or raping them, federal prosecutors said. Backpage, one of the classified sites Torres used to find victims, was seized and shut down by the federal government in April following a years-long investigation into its personals section that was notorious for ads involving prostitution.
