I've just returned from a great short trip to Luxembourg. Although I did some research before I visited, I was still unprepared for how clean, safe and compact it was. I was a little concerned that I would spend valuable visiting time trying to find the elevator to the Grund but it wasn't a problem, I just did what usually works - I followed the locals! I loved visiting the historic Grund district, with it's winding streets and lovely church - I visited in the evening and again the following morning and, if I'd had more time, I'd have spent even more time there!
I also loved vibrant Place d'Ames - busy and buzzing and surrounded by designer shops. This was one of the safest Cities I've visited in Europe - I'm always careful, but I felt more able to relax here. Everywhere was clean and I didn't see any litter or graffiti. Everybody was welcoming and I really enjoyed my visit. Thanks for your comments. Your remarks confirmed we made a good choice! The first thing I saw when I got out of the taxi from the airport to my hotel across from the Luxembourg Station were about 10 police officers who had 4 or 5 African guys in handcuffs and up against the wall.
I could not believe how sketchy the area was, especially at night. I actually feared for my safety walking back to my hotel in the evening. If you are not a person who is intimidated easily, it probably will be no big deal. However, I will never return to that side of town again to stay. I saw a lot of hustling and prostitutes walking around in that area and I guess there must be a lot of theft, too.
I later saw police driving around with their lights on a few more times in that area. Rham- Grund , in which street were you staying exactly? Just back from a 4 day trip there myself. Its a beautiful, quaint place with a nice relaxed atmosphere. Very clean and safe, had no problem walking around the city late at night doing some sightseeing.
Plenty to see and do aswell. The American Cemetery for the fallen soldiers is a must too. Found it very easy to get around with the excellent bus service which is actually free on Saturdays. Shopping is on the expensive side and eating can be too but if you look around you'll find the value. PS - We flew to Hahn due to flight prices but the Flipco bus down only takes 90 minutes or so through some lovely German countryside.
