I was commisioned by the city of Roeselare in Belgium to create an artwork inspired by Albrecht Rodenbach, a local poet, rebel and folk hero.
With his poetry and back-to-your roots approach Rodenbach inspired a student uprising advocating revival of Flemish literature, thus becoming one of the symbols of Flemish movement. My concept for this artwork was twofold: on one hand, on an idea transmission: a singular idea being sparked into existence from ether, and then having so much charge that it spreads, grows, multiplies and develops into a wave of many, until an aggregate becomes a movement, a revolution, and finally a change.
We are united and divided by what we believe the world to be. On another hand, it also speaks of us humans coming from the same source as singular beings, but then learning through trials of life that the ultimate craving we all share is that primal sense of unity and belonging.
We can only truly live-love-laugh in co-exhistence and collaboration with others, as well as to create and build meaningful things we have to unite and be in service to the humankind and the planet. If I order at an italian restaurant and there are breadsticks, I can wait.
Fountain sculpture created site specific for Crystal Ship festival in Ostend, Belgium. In all of my work I am most interested in transformation at intersections of discourses, and no other creature is more essential to change and the life cycle of ecosystems on Earth than mushrooms. Fungi transform death back to life, breaking down the old so the new can grow. We as people are also energy transmutators both physically and spiritually, and the idea behind Mushroomerina sculpture is that each one of us has the power and responsibility to change our environment.
