First of all, its location is not as good as other hotels in the area. However, it doesn't take you long to get to the places of interest. I do think that if there's availability, you should stay at Mercure Bukittinggi. It's in a historical Dutch building and right in the heart of this touristy town.
Anyhow, it took us quite a while to locate this hotel. Firstly, we used phone to get direction but when it's apparent that we're still very lost, an escort was dispatched to guide us to the Guest House. The hosts were friendly and attentive. I was being placed on the ground floor, and the first room on the left side of the Guest House. It's VERY basic but at least it has an ensuite. At different time of the day, you would hear the chanting of Muslim prayer from different sides of the Guest House.
For someone like myself who grew up in South East Asia, I found the experience assuring and comfortable but I don't believe other Westerner guests would share the same sentiment. WiFi is good enough and the bedroom is comfortable enough. There's not hot water facility available in the room to make myself a hot drink and I would need to go out to another building at rear.
However, should it rain heavily, you are out of luck. Breakfast's provided and the host made the best fried rice EVER. The portion is tiny but it's better than nothing. I didn't fault my stay here. You get what you pay for. The guest house location near the jam gadang.. I've chosen this place just because it looked nice on the pictures inside. After waking up and going out for outside breakfast I saw both vulcanos just at hand. Perfect spot for sunsets! Coffee and tea available.
Clean, well managed. Staff was really helpfull and oferred transportation tips, motorbikes for rent and kittens to caddle. Nice place to take a nap with low budget.. The food is replacing day by day with local food.. Not too far from icon place in bukittinggi..
