We are going on a cruise that goes to Santorini , and besides Fira , we have the choices of going to either Oia or Pyrgos? Anybody have any preferences or are they both equally wonderful? You don't say when you're going or how long you will have ashore.
Regardless, it's a difficult choice, and one of the downsides of having such a limited time on the island. Oia is undoubtedly beautiful, and it's the cliche destination for just about everybody who visits the island, it's where many of the photos that you see in the brochures and on TV are taken, the views are spectacular and will give you memories that will last a lifetime.
Pyrgos is a little gem of a place in the middle of the island. A maze of narrow twisting streets lead you up to the castle at the top of the mountain that give you again spectacular views across the whole island. It's not as busy and often you'll finjd yourselves the only people on your bit of path. It's a lot more peaceful and serene than Oia. Both villa ges are easily accessible by bus from Fira, or you could hire a car for the day to give you the best options.
The island's pretty small, so as I csay, it's doable if you have enough time. If you want to follow the herd, go to Oia, if you want something a bit different, go to Pyrgos, if you have time, do both. Thanks for all this info, we are going to be in Santornini for a day off a cruise ship in early November. So we are hoping that the weather will be good, fewer people would be good!! One of the ships excursions go to Pyrgos and another goes to Oia , and of course we will also be able to experience Fira.
Thanks again! We are in the same predicament, hiring a car is not a favourable option, dont want the hassle, plus if we do our own thing, ships tour passengers get prioroty for tender, so we will be late off the ship.
