The story of The Men's Home is also the story of outcasts over years. The history of the welfare state and its creation and Danish social and health historical development as it has developed over time.
The story of private charity, and philanthropy from a Christian perspective, and not least the story of a large number of zealots who have made - and are making - a difference. In , the first home opened for men without a particular home β also for those who drank, stole, and fought. It was a home that embraced most people, and where the work consisted of helping the homeless men both physically and spiritually.
In the following, we elaborate on the history of The Men's Home from its establishment until today, where The Men's Home stands as one of the oldest and experienced players among homeless services. At the end of the th century, an increasingly large group of wandering and homeless men became visible in the Copenhagen street scene. They slept in lodging houses and worked as day laborers - when there was work to be had.
The reason why the men were in Copenhagen was that Denmark was experiencing a real revolution at the time. Industrialization swept through Europe and with it came great changes in society. Large parts of the rural population, especially the men, went to the cities to work and get away from the often miserable conditions in the countryside.
But upon arrival in Copenhagen and the other big cities, some of the immigrants had to realize that the dream of work and the good life was just a dream. Now such a man has come to the point that no one wants him for proper work, only a little randomly, e. Soon they had spent their savings on hostels and perhaps also on sweetening life in the countless taverns.
