I've been to Varadero a couple of times and loved it. Now looking to venture out a little more. Looking for similar type area, small town, beachfront, white sand, blue water We were Cienfuegos about 5 years ago when we did an organized trip of the whole island. Cienfuegos is a beautiful city with some beautiful archetecture. We stayed in the city at the Hotel Union. Our room was amazing- perhaps sq ft. We were on a tour so I'm sure not everyone had a room as nice. The city is on a bay.
It has a wonderful city square and I believe was originally French rather than Spanish. There is a wonderful cultural feel.
It is also not that far from Trinidad. We also did a trip in the mountains into a national park that was amazing. I have never been to Varadero so I can't compare.
