I had a thought flash while reading the 'On Water' section. Did Hunter know about Garcia's father drowning? I'd have to assume so with their long friendship he did. You'd have to think it would influence their songwriting. Curious if that was something in your mind as well.
Another wonderful work of scholarship. Thanks so much for sharing! Hunter knew. I'm not sure if it influenced the songwriting I don't know But it does look like Hunter addressed some sadness in Garcia in song after song. But that man had an agony almost that he had to fight. I suppose it had something to do with losing his dad so young Who knows, but there was a decided darkness to him His bright side, his ebullient side, far seemed to outweigh it.
The darkness came into his music a lot. And without it, what would that music have been? Wow -- this is quite exhaustive! What a piece. Is there any version where Garcia actually sings "Logan County line? Hunter often sang different lines in his songs than Garcia did, but for the purposes of this post, his versions are considered non-Dead.
He might fume to hear it! On a related note, Garcia would often trim down much longer Hunter epics into the condensed Dead versions. Row Jimmy, for instance, is a song that makes no narrative sense at all; but the chorus was derived from a Hunter song that Garcia decided not to do: "How long, Jack, till we get to Singapore?
How long, Joe, did we sign on for? HTM It's telling that Garcia or Hunter on his behalf chose to eliminate this storyline and pursued a totally different, less ominous direction.
